Abstract Realism

Bringing faces to life with the precision of realistic pastel pencil portraits while embracing expressive freedom in abstract realism with acrylics, my art captures both detail and emotion in unique and captivating ways. The attention to detail in each pastel pencil portrait is evident through precise strokes that bring faces to life.

Pastel Portraits

My artistic journey began with highly detailed pastel portraits, where I developed a love for capturing character, expression, and emotion. Today, both pastels and acrylics remain an important part of my creative story.

About Rachel

I'm Rachel Maytum, a UK-based artist specialising in pastel portraits and acrylic paintings that blend realism with expressive, atmospheric elements. My work celebrates the beauty and connection between people, animals, and nature, whether through highly detailed portraits or emotive acrylic compositions. I am particularly drawn to creating artwork that captures personality, emotion, and the bond we share with the world around us.

After spending two decades in Northern Ireland, where illness and a difficult marriage caused me to lose confidence in myself, I began rebuilding my life. In 2019, I moved back to England to be closer to my family, and it was there that I rediscovered my lifelong dream of becoming an artist.

On 24th February 2019, I picked up a set of pastel pencils and created my first piece, Leopard Eyes. Soon afterwards, I completed my first portrait of actor Sean Patrick Flanery, a turning point that reignited my passion for art and set me on a new path.

Today, through Rachel Maytum Art, I create and sell original pastel portraits, acrylic paintings, and fine art prints. Whether working in soft pastels or vibrant acrylics, my goal is to create artwork that tells a story, evokes emotion, and brings a sense of wonder, connection, and beauty into people's lives.
